Trans Asia Flight GE235 banked strongly on its side shortly after taking off from the Taiwanese capital, clipped a highway bridge and then careened into the Keelung River.
Rescuers search into the night for 20 people missing in a crash that killed at least 23 others.

Rescuers in rubber rafts gathered 15 people alive from the ruins during daytime. The death toll was expected to rise once crews were able search through previously drowned portions of the body, which came to rest a few dozen meters from the shore.

Taiwanese rescuers have used a crane to hoist a wrecked TransAsia Airways plane from a shallow river in Taipei. The flight was filmed as it passes close to some buildings before careening towards a highway. The plane turns on its side, its left wing clipping the overpass guardrail as well as the roof of a moving vehicle. The plane’s underside is clearly visible as the falling aircraft narrowly misses a full crash into the roadway.
