Massive gunfire and explosions have shacked Burundi’s capital Bujumbura.
Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb, reporting from Bujumbura, said: “We understand military factions loyal to the president are fighting those loyal to the coup leader.”
President Pierre Nkurunziza, who is reported to be in Tanzania, has appealed for calm saying the coup has been foiled.
Burundi presidency said: “It is with regret that we have learned that a group from the armed forces mutinied this morning and declared an imaginary coup.
The general has controlled the closure of Bujumbura airport and the landlocked nation’s borders, and stated he had the support of “many” high-ranking army and police officials.
